I grew up in the small and very pretty town of Hilton in South Africa. I gained an appreciation for natural beauty and the outdoors which inspired creativity in me from a young age. We can find beauty all around us if we would only stop to look for it.
I studied Graphic Design at Durban University of Technology for four years and as my final prac in 2008 I created a photobook using a small Canon Powershot. My lecturers recognised something in me (shout-out to them) and presented me with Adobe Lightroom as one of my awards instead of the usual cash prize. This gave me confidence and equipped me to start my photography career alongside my graphic design path.
I spent the next three years working for an NPO which really pushed me to enlarge my skill set. During this time I bought my first DSLR and shot my first wedding. At the persuasion of a friend I started an informal blog and much to my amazement photography bookings came in. This was when I started to combine photography with design and was soon freelancing in both capacities.
In late 2011 I was offered a job as an internal graphic designer at Unilever South Africa - Head Office for Africa. Unilever is one of the largest FMCG companies in the world, so I was blown away by this massive opportunity to learn. I spent the next three years absorbing as much knowledge as I could, while working on some incredible projects and meeting numerous wonderful people along the way. The whole experience exceeded my wildest dreams many times, but was very challenging too. At the beginning of 2015 it was finally time to take a leap of faith and start my own business full time. It's been such an adventure. Adventures aren't always easy, but they certainly aren't boring and they create a story worth telling. I count myself blessed to capture moments in time through my lens and create unique visuals that are cherished.

Julia Jane has been my nickname for many years. There is a small story behind it. Maybe one day we'll meet and I'll tell you over coffee. Most of my clients call me Julia. I just go with it.
